Update: I am very sorry and sad to report that, in the interest of health and safety, the JOAWC 2020 has been canceled.  I was emotionally devastated by the unfortunate news. With 1 more year of eligibility as a Junior Handler, I will train and look forward to 2021 when the JOAWC will be held in Portugal. With the zeal we share as Americans, I will not let today’s disappointment rob me of tomorrow’s dreams.

The story begins on April 21st, 2012 when a North Texas family made a commitment to adopt a rescued labrador retriever (Hannah). Katelyn’s parents saw Katelyn take an immediate interest in training and caring for Hannah, and decided to enroll her in the local Collin County 4-H Club in 2013, at the age of 9. Things quickly progressed from obedience, to rally and tricks, and then agility where Katelyn really took off. After competing in local trials, and earning a few ribbons and trophies in the 2014 and 2015 State 4-H dog shows, she was ready for the next level.

Katelyn joined and began training at a local agility club (DAWG - Dallas Agility Working Group) in 2015 with both Hannah and her first border collie, Max. Hannah was getting older, and Max was just what she needed to challenge and sharpen her handling skills. In 2019 Katelyn added classes to her training with WAGD (What A Great Dog). Both WAGD and DAWG exposed Katelyn to more experienced handlers and advanced techniques, where she has been training ever since.  .

In March of 2017 Katelyn’s mom acquired their second Border Collie, Sadie, to begin training alongside her daughter. Those plans were delayed when her mom was unfortunately diagnosed with breast cancer in June of 2018 (now in remission). With the support of her family, Katelyn needed to keep moving forward and started working with Sadie, which turned out to be a perfect match. After meeting another girl on the USA World Team, a new dream surfaced - to make the team and compete internationally in the JOAWC (Junior Open Agility World Championship). Since then Katelyn has been training with the best trainers the family could afford, and the dream story is still being written.

There is no such thing as dog agility at the Olympics – but in the realm of dog sports the JOAWC COMPETITION in Finland - this is just as spectacular! Unlike the Olympics these juniors do not have sponsors and are responsible for funding their trip. Your donation makes it all possible.

16-year-old Katelyn Jones from Wylie, Texas is honored to represent Texas and the United States of America in Finland this July, at the 2020 JOAWC, and is grateful for your support and donations made through the PayPal link:
